18th Division arrived in France in July 1915 and moved south to the Somme, where the front had recently been taken over from the French by the British Army. On 16th December, 1915, the 7th Bedfordshire battalion of 54 Brigade relieved the 12th Middlesex in the trenches near Fricourt. On the following day, 17th December, the enemy were very active all day along the sector, carrying out a bombardment of considerable intensity using canisters, trench mortars, and artillery and were only silenced at 1pm after several casualties had been inflicted on 7th Bedfordshire. Leonard Woodfine who was killed in action was one of the battalion’s casualties. |
